Review of the Thesis. Who Are Reviewers?

A finished thesis cannot be admitted to defense if there is no review for it. What is this document? A dissertation review is a document designed in the same style as the project, consisting of a title, introduction, main and final parts. The purpose of the opinion is to recommend or not to allow the study to the final defense. Who should write a dissertation review? Who can be chosen as an expert? All these questions and more will be answered by our experts.

Who is a reviewer?

The reviewer is a certified specialist who is a professional in the field of science to which the project topic belongs:

  • The reviewer cannot be an employee of the same department to which the supervisor of the graduation project belongs.

  • It is best to choose a candidate or doctor of science as an expert.

  • A review of the thesis according to the model proposed by the graduate can be signed by the head of the organization in which the future graduate had an internship.

Experts are busy people, so they often do not have enough time to get acquainted with the diploma and write a good review. That is why the student himself often has to write it. He takes the completed document for signature. You need to be ready for the comments of the reviewer in order to quickly correct the shortcomings and get admission to the defense.

The expert evaluates the work, makes recommendations and puts his signature. It must be certified by the seal of the organization of which this person is an employee, at the department or in the personnel department. If the project is allowed to be defended, the opinion of the reviewer participating in the work of the commission may be decisive.

Types of reviewers

The thesis is usually written 2 reviews. One of them is internal, the other is external. Accordingly, experts are also of 2 types. An internal review is written by an employee of the university who does not work at the department to which the graduation project belongs. However, this does not mean that the teacher may not know the student at all. Often the reviewer's opinion about the graduate has already been formed. It is good if the teacher knows him well. In the event that a student has a negative impression, the assessment of his thesis may not be the best. However, most of the internal experts are guided by the quality and content of the study, not taking into account the fact of personal acquaintance with the student. This is the ideal internal reviewer.

An expert assessment of the graduation project, in addition to an employee of the university, should be given by a specialist competent in the field of research. Most often, for this role, students choose the head or deputy of the organization in which the practice took place. In most cases, it is the external reviewer who offers the student to write a review of the thesis on the model of the internal one.

What to write in a review?

After reading the review, a member of the commission who has not yet read the thesis should understand that the graduate has conducted a truly valuable study. To get this impression, you need to indicate in the text:

  • relevance;

  • completeness of problem solving;

  • compliance with the topic and content;

  • the quality and literacy of the presentation;

  • the practical value of the results of the project;

  • novelty and reliability of the literature used and much more.

It is also good if there are minor comments from the reviewer (both external and internal), which can be easily corrected. A well-written review is the way to a successful thesis defense.
